The upcoming launch of Bharat Taxi is set to offer commercial drivers a new and independent mobility option in India’s ride hailing sector. The platform aims to reduce reliance on private companies and bring a cooperative driven approach to urban and regional transport.
Cooperation Minister Amit Shah confirmed in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that the government plans to introduce the Bharat Taxi app to support drivers seeking an alternative to services like Ola, Uber and Rapido. He said, “The government proposes to launch a cooperative led digital app mobility platform which will support to free the country’s commercial vehicle drivers from dependency on private companies.”
The app will be operated by Sahkar Taxi Cooperative Ltd, a multi state cooperative registered under the MSCS Act 2002. It is positioned as the world’s first national mobility cooperative fully owned by drivers. With more than fifty one thousand registered members across New Delhi and Saurashtra, it has already become the largest driver owned mobility platform during its beta stage.
Bharat Taxi follows a cooperative model that allows drivers to retain their entire fare earnings. They also receive board representation, annual dividends and a share in the cooperative’s profits. The platform is being soft launched in Delhi and Gujarat, with beta trials available on the Google Play Store. An iOS version will be released soon. The service plans to bring two wheelers, rickshaws, taxis and four wheelers onto a single platform to address both first mile and last mile travel needs.
Key features of the app include simple ride booking, transparent fares, real time vehicle tracking, a multi lingual interface, round the clock customer support and secure onboarding for both drivers and riders. The platform also includes safety measures developed with the support of Delhi Police.
The Multi State Sahakari Taxi Cooperative Ltd was formed on June 6, 2025 and brings together eight major cooperatives. The venture is completely funded by the cooperative network without any government stake and is designed to offer a fair, transparent and reliable alternative in the competitive ride hailing market.
