Razorpay plans AI-powered payment agents using Claude to automate commerce tasks

The payments industry is steadily moving toward automation as companies explore how artificial intelligence can manage financial operations more efficiently. In this direction, Razorpay has announced plans to build AI-powered agents for payments using the Claude chatbot developed by Anthropic.

The initiative is part of a broader shift toward agentic commerce, where AI systems handle financial tasks on behalf of businesses. These advanced AI agents will be designed to perform routine but critical functions such as recovering abandoned purchases, retrying failed subscriptions, resolving disputes, and forecasting cash flows.

Enhanced functionality

A key feature of these AI agents is their ability to help businesses recover lost sales. When customers leave items in their shopping carts without completing a purchase, the AI agents can automatically reach out to them. They may send a message or voice alert asking why the purchase was not completed and offer a reminder or a small incentive to encourage payment completion.

Alongside this development, Razorpay has also introduced an agentic experience platform. This AI-native layer aims to simplify processes such as onboarding, integrating payments into digital products, and managing payment operations for online businesses.

Customization feature

Razorpay has also launched a capability that allows businesses to create their own AI agents using simple language commands. These custom-built agents can connect with platforms such as Shopify and Shiprocket. They can also integrate with messaging apps like WhatsApp.

This feature reflects a growing trend in the payments sector, where companies are exploring ways for customers to complete transactions directly through AI assistants and chat-based interfaces.

In-app commerce

Razorpay is also experimenting with AI-driven app-based commerce with several platforms, including Zomato, Swiggy, PVR INOX, and Vodafone Idea.

According to the company, these collaborations could allow customers to discover products, make decisions, and complete payments within a single AI conversation. Such an approach could transform how consumers interact with businesses online by making transactions faster, smoother, and more efficient.
