A 37-year-old software engineer has been arrested by the Central Crime Branch for allegedly scamming cybercrime victims in Bengaluru by offering fake legal assistance and charging them large sums under the pretext of service fees.
The arrest was made after a victim who had lost ₹1.5 crore in a cyber fraud case in Ramamurthynagar lodged a complaint. While searching online for legal help, the victim was contacted by the accused, who posed as a representative of a firm named ‘Quickmoto Legal Service’. The victim was then cheated out of ₹12.5 lakh in February.
Investigations revealed that the company ‘Quickmoto Legal Service’ existed only on paper and had no physical office. Further inquiry led the police to Kasturinagar, where the accused was operating under a different name, ‘India Legal Service’. He was arrested from this location.
The accused has been identified as Thufail Ahmed C A M, a resident of Kadalur in Tamil Nadu. He holds a degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering. According to officials, he had set up a tele-calling centre in Kasturinagar and hired 12 employees to reach out to victims of cyber fraud.
Police said the accused, with the support of his brother based in Dubai, had created multiple fake companies to carry out the scam. He would target cybercrime victims actively seeking help and would approach them using Voice Over Internet Protocol calls to avoid detection.
Preliminary investigations have confirmed that at least 29 people were duped through this method. The accused has been booked under the Information Technology Act and is currently in police custody as officials work to uncover more details about his criminal activities.
