An 81-year-old man from Bengaluru fell victim to a sophisticated cyber scam and lost ₹1.77 crore after fraudsters pretended to be police officers investigating a money laundering case. The scammers falsely linked the case to Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal and convinced the elderly man that he was under investigation.
The incident took place between July 5 and July 15, with the victim residing in Sadananda Nagar, NGEF Layout. He received a phone call from someone claiming to be Sandeep Jadhav, a police officer from Colaba Police Station in Mumbai. The caller alleged that the man’s Aadhaar number had been used to open a bank account involved in illegal activities.
Using WhatsApp, the fraudsters showed the man a fake arrest warrant and told him he was under “digital arrest.” They warned him that unless he cooperated, his bank accounts would be frozen and he would be arrested.
According to the FIR registered at the East CEN police station on July 23, the scammers convinced the man to transfer his savings to what they called “secure accounts” for a government-led investigation. They assured him that the money would be returned once the probe was complete.
Between July 9 and 15, the man made multiple transfers via internet banking. After receiving no updates or return of funds, he realised he had been cheated and filed a police complaint.
The FIR was filed under Sections 66, 66D, 66C, and 43 of the Information Technology Act, and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with cheating and dishonest inducement.
Police say this scam case is part of a rising trend where fraudsters use Aadhaar-linked identity theft and high-profile names to manipulate victims. Several similar scams across the country have falsely invoked Naresh Goyal’s name to extort large amounts of money.
