Concerns over brand misuse on social media have triggered a cybercrime investigation in Bengaluru after fraudulent activity linked to a well-known state-run enterprise came to light.
The Central Cybercrime Police have registered an FIR on January 20 following a complaint filed by Doddappa Sutagatti, a marketing assistant with the Karnataka State Industrial Corporation (KSIC). The complaint alleges that unidentified individuals created fake Instagram pages posing as official KSIC accounts.
According to the FIR, the accused have been operating these impersonated accounts for the past 6 months. They allegedly offered sarees purchased from authorised KSIC outlets for sale online without any permission. The complainant stated that such unauthorised online sales could damage the brand’s reputation and mislead customers.
Police officials said the fake Instagram accounts used KSIC’s name and identity to appear authentic, raising concerns about potential consumer deception and misuse of the organisation’s brand value.
The Central Cybercrime Police confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to identify those behind the fake social media accounts and determine the extent of the activity.
Authorities are examining digital evidence linked to the accounts as part of the probe.
