Kolkata: The Bengal CID has revealed its intention to recruit 32 computer science experts to enhance its capabilities in combating cybercrime, particularly in light of growing worries about fake news and hate speech on social media. This move follows an increase in misinformation and hate-related content online, particularly concerning the Murshidabad violence, the Pahalgam attack, and Operation Sindoor. Collaborative efforts from Bengal Police, Kolkata Police, and CID have pinpointed over 1,500 social media accounts that are disseminating false information and hate content.
The main duties of these analysts will involve collecting electronic evidence, monitoring social media for instances of hate speech and fake news, and working with social media administrators to facilitate the swift removal of harmful content when required. In addition to gathering electronic evidence, they will be responsible for continuously tracking hate speech and fake news. They will coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure prompt action is taken to eliminate such content. Furthermore, they will establish and maintain communication with social media administrators to assist the CID in obtaining leads.
Recognizing the interests of the younger generation, the job postings have also been made available on the CID’s website for public viewing.
Applications will be accepted online from June 2 to July 1.
According to the official notification posted on the CID website, candidates must have either a PGDCA, a BSc in computer science, a BCA, or a DOEACC ‘A’ level course certification from recognized institutions.
The selected analysts will receive a monthly salary of Rs 21,000 on a temporary and contractual basis.
The state CID previously advertised for nine different positions for cyber forensics experts (CFEs) who will be domain specialists in their own fields without any background in traditional policing. This will also include crypto analysts.
Although these positions are contractual, sources within the CID stated that they are prepared to offer compensation that is competitive within the industry.
Law enforcement officials mentioned that the state investigative agency has already hired — or is in the process of hiring — two Cloud forensic experts, one crypto analyst, two disk forensic experts, two mobile forensic experts, one network forensic expert, and one malware forensic expert.
The experts will operate in a state-of-the-art cyber lab, which was first proposed in 2017 when the agency aimed to recruit 100 software engineers to identify and prevent the dissemination of rumors on social media platforms.
