BEL and Bellatrix Aerospace partner to develop satellite systems for VLEO missions

In a move aimed at strengthening India’s space technology capabilities, Bharat Electronics Limited has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bellatrix Aerospace to collaborate on the design, development and manufacturing of advanced satellite systems and payloads. The partnership combines BEL’s expertise in mission-critical defence electronics with Bellatrix Aerospace’s capabilities in satellite propulsion and advanced space subsystems.

The collaboration will focus on building next-generation satellite platforms designed for Very Low Earth Orbit operations. Satellites operating in VLEO offer advantages such as improved imaging resolution and faster data communication. However, missions at such altitudes also require specialised technologies due to the demanding environmental conditions in this orbital region.

By combining their technological capabilities, the two organisations aim to develop integrated satellite solutions that can support both strategic and civilian space missions. The initiative is expected to contribute to the growth of India’s indigenous satellite technology ecosystem.

BEL, a Navratna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has decades of experience in developing advanced electronics and payload systems for defence and strategic applications. Bellatrix Aerospace is recognised for its work in satellite propulsion technologies and innovative space subsystems. The partnership brings together the experience of a defence public sector organisation and the agility of a deep-tech startup.

According to BEL, collaboration with emerging deep-tech startups is important to accelerate innovation and strengthen India’s expanding space ecosystem.

Commenting on the partnership, Rohan M. Ganapathy highlighted the potential of Very Low Earth Orbit missions.

He noted that VLEO represents a new frontier for high-performance satellite operations, but it requires specialised technologies designed to withstand the unique challenges of operating at such low altitudes. Through this collaboration, both organisations aim to develop satellites capable of sustained operations in VLEO. The initiative is expected to help expand India’s capabilities in advanced space technologies and strengthen the country’s position in the rapidly evolving global space sector.
