An internal audit has led to criminal action against a bank official over alleged financial irregularities spanning nearly 2 years.
The Uppinangady police have registered a case against a joint manager of the Bank of Baroda for the alleged misappropriation of cash and gold jewellery worth more than ₹71.4 lakh. The accused has been identified as Subrahmanyam, aged 30, who was posted at the Perne branch and was in charge of ATM operations.
According to the police, the complaint was filed by C V S Chandrashekhar, regional manager of the bank in Mangaluru. The complaint states that between February 06, 2024 and December 16, 2025, the accused failed to deposit the correct amounts into the ATM, resulting in the siphoning of ₹70.86 lakh.
The discrepancy came to light during an internal review of ATM cash handling. Following this, bank officials inspected the branch safe lockers, where they found that 4.400 grams of gold jewellery valued at ₹55000 was also missing.
The complaint further stated that after the irregularities were detected, Subrahmanyam absconded and has not reported for duty since. Efforts are currently underway to trace his whereabouts.
Based on the complaint, the Uppinangady police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for offences related to dishonest misappropriation of property, criminal breach of trust, and cheating. An investigation is in progress to ascertain the full extent of the alleged fraud and recover the missing assets.
Police officials said further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing probe.
