Bank accounts with inactive mobile numbers linked may encounter difficulties when making UPI transactions

New guidelines are going into effect for users of UPI through applications like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm as of today, April 1. Inactive mobile phones connected to bank accounts must be deleted, according to recommendations recently released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). You may encounter serious problems while attempting UPI transactions if your bank account is linked to an inactive mobile phone. The NPCI has put this new order into effect in response to the growing prevalence of cybercrime. They stress that the banking and UPI systems need to be cleared of mobile numbers that are inactive or no longer in use. Technical issues are likely to arise from such inactive numbers. Furthermore, there is a far higher chance of fraud if these numbers were provided by telecom providers using someone else’s name.

It is essential that your bank account and mobile phone be connected in order to utilize UPI securely. During UPI transactions, this number acts as your identification, guaranteeing that the right person receives the money. You run the risk of your payments failing or, worse, ending up in someone else’s account if the number you’ve connected is no longer active or has been reassigned.

What should you do?

  • Checking with your telecom operator, such as Jio, Airtel, Vi, or BSNL, is crucial if you discover that a mobile number connected to your bank account is no longer operational or hasn’t been recharged in a long time.
  • You should either update your bank account with a new cellphone number or revive the number right once if it is in fact dormant.
  • Additionally, banks and UPI applications have been instructed by the NPCI to update their databases of deleted mobile numbers on a weekly basis. By taking this step, everyone’s transaction security will be improved as inactive numbers are swiftly eliminated from the banking system as of April 1.
