Baidu unveils new AI chips and upgraded Ernie model to strengthen domestic computing capabilities

Baidu has unveiled two new artificial intelligence semiconductors aimed at offering Chinese companies powerful, cost-effective, and domestically controlled computing power. The announcement comes amid increasing restrictions from the United States on the export of advanced AI chips to Chinese firms, pushing local companies to accelerate the development of home-grown alternatives.

At its annual Baidu World technology conference, the company introduced the M100 and M300 chips. The M100, designed primarily for inference tasks, is expected to be launched in early 2026. The M300, capable of both training and inference, is scheduled for release in early 2027. Training refers to the process of teaching AI models using large datasets, while inference applies those trained models to make predictions and process user requests.

Baidu, which has been developing proprietary chips since 2011, also revealed two new supernode products. These systems link multiple chips together using advanced networking technologies to overcome individual performance limitations.

One of the upcoming systems, Tianchi 256, will combine 256 of Baidu’s P800 chips and is set to be released in the first half of next year. A more advanced version, featuring 512 P800 chips, will follow in the second half of the year.

The move follows similar efforts by Huawei, which introduced its CloudMatrix 384 system composed of 384 Ascend 910C chips. Industry analysts suggest this system may outperform Nvidia’s GB200 NVL72, one of the most advanced AI computing solutions from the United States. Huawei has also announced plans to introduce even more powerful supernode products in the future.

In addition to the chip announcements, Baidu introduced an updated version of its Ernie large language model. The company said the new model not only delivers improved text processing but also offers enhanced image and video analysis capabilities, reinforcing Baidu’s ambition to remain at the forefront of China’s AI innovation landscape.
