Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud division of Amazon, has announced a major investment of USD 12.7 billion, approximately ₹1,05,600 crore, to strengthen cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure in India by 2030.
This investment builds on AWS’s previous commitment of USD 3.7 billion made between 2016 and 2022. With the latest funding, the total projected investment in India by AWS will reach USD 16.4 billion by the end of the decade.
The expansion is expected to support over 1,31,700 full-time equivalent jobs each year across sectors such as construction, maintenance, engineering and telecommunications. It is also estimated to contribute USD 23.3 billion to India’s gross domestic product by 2030.
AWS currently runs two data centre regions in the country — one in Mumbai, launched in 2016, and another in Hyderabad, which began operations in late 2022. Plans are already in motion to expand its presence to Bengaluru and Chennai, further enhancing the company’s infrastructure footprint in India.
Puneet Chandok, President of Commercial Business for AWS India and South Asia, stated that the investment will support initiatives in skill development, sustainability and community outreach. He noted that since 2017, AWS has trained over four million people in cloud technologies across India.
India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology welcomed the announcement, saying the move supports the government’s Digital India vision and complements the recently introduced Cloud and Data Centre policy framework.
This large-scale investment highlights AWS’s commitment to India as a strategic technology hub. It reflects the company’s broader aim to promote digital transformation, build AI capabilities, and reduce reliance on external infrastructure by developing robust local systems.
