AWS is planning to invest $8.2 billion in Maharashtra over next 4-5 years, confirmed IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Over the next several years, Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company’s cloud computing division, plans to invest over $8.2 billion in Maharashtra, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said Monday. Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of information technology, emphasizes that the cloud investment would provide a significant number of job possibilities. “Along with the investment, there will be significant growth in employment,” the IT minister said. He also revealed that the investment rollout is expected between 2029 and 2030. Vaishnaw also revealed that AWS would launch its own graphics processing units (GPUs) and cloud management services in the region, according to a media report.

Amazon presently has two data centers in India: one in Hyderabad, which started operations in 2022, and one in Mumbai, which opened in 2016.

India’s initiatives to encourage greater local cloud storage include the AWS investment. According to a recent IDC analysis, India’s cloud storage market is expected to grow from $8.3 billion in 2023 to $24.2 billion by 2028. These expansion plans are in keeping with that prediction.

In order to bolster its e-commerce operations, Amazon Web Services (AWS) also promised to invest an extra $2 billion in India last year. Amazon India’s national manager, Samir Kumar, stated during its annual Smbhav event in December 2024 that the company will be able to “digitise 10 million small businesses” and “enable over 12 million small businesses to become a part of the digital economy” in four years. According to Kumar, Amazon has also helped India create around 1.4 million direct and indirect employment and facilitated exports totaling almost $13 billion.

Additionally, Amazon has pledged to facilitate a total of over $80 billion in Indian e-commerce exports by 2030. In comparison, this is four times higher than Amazon’s promise to facilitate $20 billion in exports from e-commerce by 2025.

An increasing number of cloud and AI businesses have recently increased their investments in India. In order to bolster India’s AI and cloud infrastructure as well as skilling programs, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella earlier this year announced a $3 billion investment in India over the following two years. In order to increase Microsoft’s AI capabilities, Nadella had stated that the $3 billion investment will include additional data centers. The corporation also stated that it plans to teach 10 million Indians in AI capabilities by 2030 as part of its ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative.
