AWS Brings OpenAI’s Open Weight Models to Amazon Bedrock and SageMaker

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has officially made OpenAI’s open weight foundation models available on its platforms, Amazon Bedrock and Amazon SageMaker AI. This marks the first time that OpenAI’s open weight models—gpt oss 120b and gpt oss 20b—are accessible through AWS, giving customers the ability to easily develop and deploy generative artificial intelligence applications.

The larger model, gpt oss 120b, delivers a strong performance advantage. According to AWS, it is ten times more price efficient than the Gemini model, eighteen times more than DeepSeek R1, and seven times more than OpenAI’s own o4 model. This addition strengthens AWS’s promise to offer a wide variety of model options and extends its capabilities in the generative AI space.

These models are built for advanced use cases such as agentic AI workflows, coding support, scientific research, and solving complex mathematical problems. They support features like instruction following, web search, tool use, chain of thought reasoning, and can process longer content using a 128K token input window. This makes them suitable for tasks involving customer service chats, technical documentation, academic papers, and more.

Using Amazon Bedrock’s AgentCore, customers can deploy these models securely with built-in support for features like Guardrails, which help block up to 88 percent of harmful content. Additional tools such as Custom Model Import and Knowledge Bases will also be added in the future. On Amazon SageMaker AI, customers can pre train, fine tune, evaluate, and deploy these models using a full suite of AI development tools.

Atul Deo, director of product at AWS, said, “Open weight models are an important area of innovation in the future development of generative AI technology, which is why we have invested in making AWS the best place to run them—including those launching today from OpenAI.”

Dmitry Pimenov, product lead at OpenAI, added, “Our open weight models help developers—from solo builders to large enterprise teams—unlock new possibilities across industries and use cases.”

With this integration, OpenAI joins other open weight model providers like DeepSeek, Meta, and Mistral AI on AWS. This move expands AWS’s collection of over 100 generative AI models, supporting businesses of all sizes in building and scaling intelligent applications.
