A new approach to vehicle interiors is emerging as autonomous driving technologies move closer to large-scale deployment, blending safety with flexibility for future mobility.
Autoliv and Tensor have introduced what they describe as the world’s first foldable steering wheel designed specifically for Level 4 autonomous driving. The innovation will be showcased this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The foldable steering wheel is engineered to retract fully into the dashboard when the vehicle is operating in autonomous mode. This creates additional cabin space and improves passenger comfort. When manual driving is required, the steering wheel deploys smoothly back into position, restoring standard driver control.
A key feature of the system is its dual-mode airbag configuration. During manual driving, a traditional steering wheel airbag is active. When the steering wheel is folded away, an instrument panel airbag takes over, ensuring occupant safety regardless of the driving mode.
Fabien Dumont, executive vice president and chief technology officer at Autoliv, said the innovation reflects the changing demands of vehicle safety. “Automotive safety can no longer follow a one-size-fits-all philosophy,” Dumont said. “Our collaboration with Tensor delivers a steering solution that enhances both safety and comfort by adapting to the vehicle’s mode.”
Tensor CEO Jay Xiao said the development moves beyond concept-stage ideas. “Foldable steering wheels previously existed only in concept cars—now we are bringing this innovation to volume-production vehicles for everyday use,” Xiao said.
The foldable steering wheel will make its production debut in Tensor’s upcoming Robocar. The autonomous vehicle is scheduled to enter volume production in the second half of 2026. Manufacturing will take place at VinFast’s Hai Phong facility in Vietnam.
Initial market availability is planned for the United States, the European Union, and the Middle East. The collaboration highlights a wider industry trend toward adaptive vehicle interiors, as traditional driving controls evolve to support fully autonomous operation while maintaining safety standards.
