AUMOVIO plans major India layoffs as part of global R&D restructuring

AUMOVIO, a Germany-based automotive technology company, is set to reduce its workforce in India as part of a broader global overhaul of its research and development operations. According to a media report, the company plans to cut around 1,000 jobs in India, making it one of the most significant recent workforce reductions in the country’s global capability centre (GCC) ecosystem.

The move is linked to a strategic reset of AUMOVIO’s R&D priorities. The company is reportedly refining its R&D strategy “to sharpen our focus on market-leading technologies,” while accelerating development in areas such as software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and improving overall operational efficiency.

AUMOVIO is a spin-off from Continental, one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers. The company works across key automotive technology domains, including sensors, braking systems, comfort solutions, and AI-powered Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

India currently employs about 6,000 people at AUMOVIO. The proposed reduction means nearly 16–17% of its local workforce could be impacted, positioning India among the most affected geographies in the company’s global restructuring exercise.

Globally, the R&D overhaul is expected to affect up to 4,000 roles across multiple countries, including India, Singapore, Romania, Serbia, Germany, and Mexico. The initiative reflects the company’s effort to rebalance costs while continuing investments in next-generation automotive technologies.

In terms of financials, AUMOVIO reported global sales of €19.6 billion (around Rs 1,76,400 crore) in 2024. Its R&D spending stood at 11.9% of sales, or approximately €2.3 billion (Rs 20,700 crore), as of the third quarter of 2025. The company now plans to bring R&D expenditure to below 10% of sales by 2027, down from the current levels.

The restructuring underscores the growing pressure on global automotive and technology firms to optimise costs while shifting focus toward software-led and AI-driven innovation.
