Assam Police have arrested 11 individuals in connection with a major cyber fraud case. The arrests, made by the Chirang police, led to the busting of a sophisticated cyber fraud racket that was operating from outside the state.
The investigation was initiated following a complaint lodged by Imran Hussain at the Bijni police station. Hussain alleged that his wife’s bank account details and SIM card had been fraudulently used by the perpetrators.
Chirang Superintendent of Police (SP) Akshat Garg reported that the accused obtained this sensitive information by deceptively promising to credit money against Hussain’s wife’s Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) job card. This modus operandi highlights how fraudsters exploit government schemes and vulnerable individuals.
During the operation, police seized a substantial amount of electronic evidence from the accused, including multiple ATM cards, SIM cards, cheque books, and bank passbooks. These items are crucial for further investigation into the extent of the fraud and identifying other potential victims or accomplices.
The arrests underscore the persistent efforts of Assam Police to combat cybercrime and protect citizens from financial scams. Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant against such fraudulent schemes and to never share personal or banking details with unverified sources.
