ASM International NV, a leading supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, has reported that its second-quarter orders fell short of expectations. The company attributed this performance to the ongoing struggles faced by some chipmakers, which have overshadowed the robust demand driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) boom.
ASM stated that orders declined by 4% from the previous year, a figure lower than the average analyst estimates. This shortfall was primarily due to a decrease in bookings for advanced logic and foundry technologies, despite strong sales for its cutting-edge machines.
The company also pointed to the inconsistent nature of orders during the period as a contributing factor to the decline in bookings. This suggests a volatile market environment where demand can fluctuate significantly.
While the broader semiconductor industry is experiencing a surge in demand fueled by the rapid expansion of AI technologies, ASM’s results indicate that not all segments of the chipmaking ecosystem are benefiting equally. Challenges faced by certain chipmakers appear to be creating headwinds for equipment suppliers like ASM, even as they provide essential tools for the most advanced chip production.
