IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Adopts Zoho Suite, Urges Shift Towards Swadeshi Tools

Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced his decision to move to Zoho’s suite of productivity tools, encouraging citizens to follow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for “swadeshi.” In a post on X, he stated, “I am moving to Zoho – our own Swadeshi platform for documents, spreadsheets and presentations. I urge all to join PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s call for Swadeshi by adopting indigenous products and services.”

Zoho, headquartered in Tamil Nadu, is among India’s most successful software companies, generating annual revenue of more than 1 billion dollars. With a portfolio of over 80 applications, the company competes globally with Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and Salesforce. Founder and Chief Executive Officer Sridhar Vembu described the minister’s move as “a huge morale boost” for Zoho’s engineers, adding, “We will make you proud and make our nation proud.”

The announcement comes shortly after Prime Minister Modi urged citizens to cut reliance on imported goods, pointing out how foreign products have become a major part of everyday life. The development also follows growing trade tensions, with the United States recently imposing tariffs of up to 50 percent on imports from India.

Meanwhile, India is pushing ahead with plans to strengthen its technology ecosystem. As part of these efforts, the IndiaAI Mission last week revealed the selection of eight companies for the second phase of its foundation model programme. According to Vaishnaw, the mission aims to create sovereign AI and position each participating team as one of the top five global players in their field.

The minister’s decision to adopt Zoho is being seen as a symbolic yet significant step towards promoting homegrown technology and reducing dependence on foreign platforms.
