Apple’s much-anticipated foldable iPhone could take inspiration from the recently launched iPhone Air, according to a report citing Mark Gurman. The foldable device, expected to debut as part of the iPhone 18 lineup in 2026, may resemble “two iPhone Airs placed side by side.”
The foldable model is not expected to double in thickness. Similar to how Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 distributes its components across two panels to maintain a slim profile, Apple’s foldable iPhone could follow the same approach. This design could even make the device thinner than the iPhone Air when opened flat. For perspective, the iPhone Air measures just 5.64mm, and analysts predict the foldable iPhone could measure between 9mm and 9.5mm when folded and 4.5mm to 4.8mm when unfolded. Reports also suggest the device may include a titanium frame for durability.
The handset is likely to feature a book-style design with a 5.5-inch cover display at 2088×1422 resolution and a 7.8-inch internal foldable display with 2713×1920 resolution. Camera specifications may include four lenses in total, with a dual rear setup housing a 48MP primary sensor alongside an ultra-wide or telephoto lens, while the front cameras could both be 24MP units.
One of the standout features may be a crease-free folding display using “in-cell touch screen” technology aimed at reducing visible folds while improving touch performance.
Meanwhile, the broader iPhone 18 lineup is expected to build on the refreshed design introduced with the iPhone 17, offering refinements rather than dramatic changes.
On the manufacturing side, reports suggest Apple has held discussions with suppliers in Taiwan for a small-scale test line, with potential future production in India. However, Gurman indicated that large-scale manufacturing will likely remain in China initially, though Apple continues to explore supply chain diversification.
