Apple Warns iPhone Users to Delete Chrome for Better Digital Privacy

Apple is urging iPhone users to uninstall Google Chrome, claiming it jeopardizes digital privacy in their new video titled ‘Privacy on iPhone: Flock.’

The video, which humorously references Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film The Birds, illustrates how Chrome allows trackers to monitor users’ online activities. It shows iPhone users being followed by surveillance cameras while browsing, which only stop when they switch to Safari.

The title ‘Flock’ alludes to Google’s discontinued FLOC tracking technology, intended to deliver targeted ads without individual tracking. The video emphasizes that even browsers marketed as privacy-centric can still expose user data to trackers.

By promoting Safari, the only fully sandboxed browser on iOS, Apple asserts that genuine privacy is best achieved through its native tools rather than third-party options. This campaign gained traction after Google revealed it would retain third-party cookies in Chrome, contrary to previous commitments to eliminate them, prompting Apple to position Safari as ‘a private browser.’

Allowing third-party cookies enables advertisers to track user behavior for personalized ads, a significant revenue stream for Google. Although Google initially planned to phase out these cookies in favor of a privacy-friendly ad system, it ultimately decided to continue offering users the choice of third-party cookies in Chrome.

While tracking cookies can pose privacy risks and increase the chances of data leaks, they are not inherently harmful, meaning Chrome users will remain tracked unless they use Incognito Mode or clear their cookies manually.
