File sharing on Apple devices is getting a security focused upgrade with the latest software release. Apple has rolled out iOS 26.2, introducing key changes to AirDrop that aim to make sharing safer and easier, especially with people outside a user’s contact list.
The biggest addition in the update is a new feature called “AirDrop codes”. This feature is designed to improve security while keeping the sharing process simple for users.
AirDrop codes add an extra step of verification when files are shared with unknown users. Instead of relying only on existing visibility settings, the receiving device now generates a one time code. The sender must enter this code for the transfer to be completed. This process helps users confirm who they are sharing files with and reduces the risk of accidental or unwanted transfers.
The new feature also introduces a temporary sharing option for non contacts. With AirDrop codes, users can now allow short term access to someone who is not saved in their contacts. After the one time code is shared and entered, both users can see each other as AirDrop options for up to 30 days. This removes the need to add new contacts for short term or repeated file sharing.
Alongside this update, Apple has added a dedicated management section for AirDrop under Settings, General, and AirDrop. This section allows users to view and manage their authorised AirDrop connections. Apple notes that users will automatically remain visible to people they have shared a one time code with for 30 days, giving more control over file sharing preferences.
Apple appears to be addressing a common user need with this update. Many users often share files repeatedly with the same people without wanting to save them permanently as contacts. AirDrop codes aim to solve this by offering a balance between convenience and security.
The feature provides a faster and more controlled way to share files, allowing extended access when needed while still protecting user privacy.
