Apple’s decision to manufacture in India has had a major impact on job creation. A recent report reveals that the company’s supplier network in the country has generated more than 3,50,000 jobs. Out of these, around 1,20,000 are direct positions. The number does not include jobs created at Apple’s five iPhone factories, meaning the total employment impact is even higher.
Apple began assembling iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE. Its presence expanded rapidly after the launch of the government’s Production Linked Incentive scheme in 2020, which offered financial support for smartphone manufacturing. In 2025, for the first time, Apple’s flagship iPhone 17 series and the iPhone Air were built in India from day one.
Currently, Apple works with about 45 suppliers in India, including major firms and over 20 local Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. An official said, “Apple has strongly pivoted to bringing multiple Indian equipment manufacturers into its supply chain.” Partners include Tata Electronics, Aequs, Jabil, Microplastics and ATL, with Foxconn continuing to play a central role.
Between 2021-22 and 2024-25, Apple manufactured iPhones worth more than 45 billion dollars in India. About 76 percent of this, nearly 34 billion dollars, was exported. This has helped smartphones become India’s top export, a sharp jump from their 167th rank in 2014-15.
Apple’s manufacturing base is spread across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, with component makers located in states such as Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana. According to an official, “One in five iPhones are now made in India due to the expanding ecosystem of Apple.”
The company is expected to continue strengthening its presence in India, which is now a key hub in its global supply chain.
