Apple strengthens video editing ecosystem with MotionVFX acquisition

In a move aimed at enhancing its creative software offerings, Apple has acquired MotionVFX, a company known for developing plug-ins, templates and advanced tools for its Final Cut Pro video editing platform. The financial details of the deal have not been disclosed.

“We are extremely excited to share that MotionVFX is joining the Apple team to continue to empower creators and editors to do their best work,” the company said in a statement on its website. “For over 15 years, we’ve been on a mission to create world-class, visually inspiring content and effects for video editors. From the very beginning, we’ve been all about quality, ease of use and great design. These are also the values that we admire most in Apple’s products, and we’re thrilled to be able to embrace them together.” Apple has not publicly commented on the acquisition.

Founded in 2009 and based in Warsaw, MotionVFX offers subscription plans starting at $29 per month for access to professional video editing tools, graphics and templates. The acquisition is expected to lead to deeper integration of these tools into Apple’s ecosystem. It could also strengthen Apple’s position against competitors like Adobe Premiere Pro and the broader Adobe Creative Cloud suite.

The move aligns with Apple’s growing focus on its services business. In January, the company introduced Creator Studio, a subscription bundle priced at $12.99 per month or $129 per year, offering access to apps like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Pixelmator Pro, Motion, Compressor and MainStage, along with premium content for iWork apps. By adding MotionVFX’s capabilities, Apple may further boost adoption of this bundle. Notably, Apple’s services segment contributed over 26% of its revenue in the last fiscal year, up from 8.5% in 2015.
