Apple and Samsung have accounted for around 94% of India’s smartphone exports

Around 94% of India’s smartphone exports are from Apple and Samsung, according to Counterpoint’s “Make in India” service on Thursday, March 20, 2025. These two brands were the main drivers of the 6% year-over-year (YoY) growth in 2024 in “Made in India” smartphone shipments.

“Both the brands have significantly expanded their manufacturing in India to align with the country’s objective of reducing reliance on imports and strengthening its presence in the global supply chains,” the research firm said.

With a 7% YoY rise and a 13% YoY increase in exports, Samsung maintained its position as India’s leading smartphone maker in 2024.

With a 14% YoY gain to take a 14% shipment share, Vivo came in second. In 2024, Foxconn Hon Hai’s production volumes increased 19% year over year, supported by the iPhone 13, 14, and 15 models.

Oppo dropped to fourth place as a result of a 34% YoY decline in shipments. Xiaomi and Realme also contributed to a double-digit increase in DBG’s shipments in 2024.

With a 107% YoY increase in 2024, Tata Electronics was the fastest-growing smartphone maker. Here, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models contributed the most volume.

With robust sales from Motorola and Transsion brands, Dixon became the leading manufacturer in the whole mobile device market (smartphones and feature phones).

Dixon’s 39% YoY growth in the smartphone market was supported by new alliances with Realme and Transsion brands.

The government’s PLI (manufacturing-Linked Incentive) program, which has enticed international manufacturers to establish or grow their manufacturing facilities in the nation, is another factor contributing to the rise in smartphone exports.

“Major global smartphone manufacturers are increasingly diversifying production to ensure a more resilient supply chain and minimize the risks associated with over-reliance on a single country. India presents itself as a great manufacturing destination due to a huge local market, affordable labor costs and favorable schemes from the government focused on increasing local manufacturing. Smartphone manufacturing in India is expected to grow in double digits in 2025, along with increasing local value addition,” said Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst, Counterpoint.
