Apple is working on a major shift in its display technology across its MacBook and iPad ranges. Reports indicate that the company will begin introducing OLED screens to more models in the coming years which may lead to higher prices for several devices.
The company already uses OLED displays in the iPhone, iPad Pro and Apple Watch. According to a recent report, Apple is now testing OLED panels for upcoming versions of the MacBook Air, iPad Air and iPad Mini. The transition will take place step by step rather than all at once.
A MacBook Pro with an OLED display is expected to arrive near the end of 2026 or early 2027. This upgrade will likely come along with a new design. Work has also begun on a MacBook Air using OLED technology but this model is not expected before 2028. Both the updated Pro and Air laptops are expected to feature future M6 processors.
Before the OLED models are released Apple plans to refresh its laptop lineup sooner. A MacBook Air running the M5 chip could launch in spring 2026 along with MacBook Pro models powered by the M5 Pro and M5 Max versions.
The iPad lineup is also set for upgrades. The iPad Mini is expected to be the first to receive an OLED display in 2026. This version may also feature a new vibration based speaker system that removes visible speaker holes which can improve water resistance. This design takes a different approach from the seals used on iPhones.
Apple is planning one more iPad Air model with an LCD screen set to release in spring 2026. An OLED version of the iPad Air will follow later.
With the shift to OLED displays prices are expected to rise. The iPad Mini which currently starts at $499 could see an increase of around $100 once the OLED model arrives. The iPad Air priced from $599 may also receive an adjustment to keep price differences clear across the range.
This move reflects broader industry trends as many high end devices from other brands already use OLED screens while more affordable models continue to use LCD. Apple’s gradual rollout suggests OLED will remain a premium feature for now.
