Apple plans major Siri upgrade with built-in AI chatbot

Apple is set to transform Siri into a full-fledged AI chatbot later this year, aiming to compete with OpenAI and Google in the generative AI space. The new digital assistant, code-named Campos, will be integrated directly into iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems, replacing the current Siri interface. Users will access it the same way as before, by saying “Siri” or holding the side button on their devices.

The revamped assistant will offer advanced conversational abilities, going far beyond the current Siri or the non-chatbot update expected in early 2026. Today’s Siri lacks the natural back-and-forth feel seen in ChatGPT or Google Gemini. Apple’s move is part of a broader strategy to catch up in AI, following the rocky rollout of the Apple Intelligence platform in 2024, which had delayed and underwhelming features. Following the news, Apple shares rose 1.7% to $250.83, while Alphabet, supplying the technology for the project, increased 2.6% to $330.32.

Campos will support both voice and text interactions and will be integrated into iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, internally known as Rave and Fizz. Apple is testing it as a standalone Siri app but plans to keep it embedded across its operating systems. The assistant will help users search the web, generate content, summarize information, analyze files and interact with personal data such as files, songs, calendar events and messages. It will also manage device functions, including making calls, setting timers and launching the camera.

Apple’s shift to a chatbot marks a change in strategy. The company has traditionally woven AI into features rather than offering standalone chat experiences. Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, said in a June interview, “Apple did not want to send users off into some chat experience in order to get things done.” Still, with competitors like Samsung and Google embedding AI deeply into devices, the update is crucial. The chatbot is expected to be unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June and released in September.
