Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new mixed reality headset, the Vision Air, in 2027. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the Vision Air will be a lighter and more affordable alternative to the premium Vision Pro.
The Vision Air is expected to weigh around 500 grams, more than 40 per cent lighter than the Vision Pro, which currently weighs 1.375 pounds. The weight reduction is aimed at addressing one of the main criticisms of the Vision Pro, which many early adopters found bulky and uncomfortable during extended use. Reports suggest Apple may use a titanium internal frame and a slimmer design to achieve the reduction without compromising strength.
Pricing has also been a challenge for Apple’s current headset. The Vision Pro retails at 3,499 dollars, placing it in the ultra-premium category. Kuo believes the Vision Air will be priced at roughly half that amount, around 1,750 dollars, making it significantly more accessible. With the lower price and improved comfort, Apple is projected to sell up to one million Vision Air units in 2027, compared to an estimated 400,000 Vision Pro shipments.
While the Vision Air is still a few years away, Apple is also working on the next generation of the Vision Pro. Reports suggest that the Vision Pro 2 could debut as early as late 2025 or early 2026, featuring an upgraded processor such as the M4 or M5 chip, a redesigned strap to reduce head strain and a more powerful neural engine to enhance AI performance in immersive environments.
These updates are expected to improve the Vision Pro experience, but pricing is unlikely to change, keeping the Pro line in the luxury segment. Until the Vision Air arrives, Apple’s mixed reality strategy will continue to focus on refining its high-end offering.
