Apple is in discussions with artificial intelligence companies Anthropic and OpenAI to potentially use their AI models in a major update for Siri. This move would mark a shift from Apple’s current reliance on its in-house technology, known as Apple Foundation Models.
According to a report, Apple has tested external AI systems as part of efforts to improve Siri’s performance. These tests were led by Siri Chief Mike Rockwell and software engineering head Craig Federighi, who took charge of Siri following delays in Apple Intelligence and other Siri features. Previously, Siri was under the leadership of John Giannandrea, who was later sidelined.
Rockwell directed his team to evaluate whether Siri would perform better using Apple’s own AI or third-party models such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini. After multiple rounds of testing, Anthropic’s Claude was found to be the most promising for Siri’s upgrade.
This led to Apple’s vice president of corporate development, Adrian Perica, beginning talks with Anthropic about integrating Claude into Siri. comapny has also discussed with both Anthropic and OpenAI the idea of running a customized version of their models on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, the same infrastructure used for Apple’s advanced internal models.
However, financial disagreements have emerged during these discussions. Anthropic is reportedly asking for multibillion-dollar annual fees that would increase significantly over time for using its technology on iPhones. These terms have created uncertainty, and Apple may consider working with OpenAI or another partner instead if a deal with Anthropic cannot be finalized.
Initially, Apple had planned to upgrade Siri using its own technology with a launch aimed for 2026. But these latest developments show Apple is now open to outside partnerships in order to deliver more advanced AI capabilities in its devices.
