Apple may skip iPhone 18 and launch iPhone Air 2 as the next entry model in 2026

Apple is reportedly reshaping its iPhone lineup once again and may skip the launch of the standard iPhone 18 in 2026. Reports suggest that the company is planning to introduce the second-generation iPhone Air as its new entry-level flagship, taking the place of both the current iPhone 17 and the recently launched iPhone Air.

The move is said to be influenced by the positive response to the iPhone Air, which debuted earlier this year as the thinnest iPhone ever at 5.6mm. Positioned between the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models, the Air offered near-Pro performance with the A19 Pro chip and a slimmer design, though it featured a slightly less advanced camera setup.

Despite its initial success, sources indicate that Apple has reportedly asked suppliers to reduce production of the first iPhone Air by about 80 percent. This suggests the company is testing how well the Air can perform as a mainstream entry model. The next version is expected to come at a lower price compared to the first-generation model.

The iPhone Air 2 is expected to launch in September 2026 and could completely replace the regular iPhone 18. It will likely keep its ultra-thin design while introducing the new A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, promising up to 15 percent faster performance and 30 percent better efficiency. Storage options are expected to range from 256GB to 1TB, with 8GB RAM and a 3,150 mAh battery supporting MagSafe and 20W wired charging. Connectivity upgrades such as WiFi 7, Bluetooth 6, and eSIM-only support are also expected.

In terms of design, Apple may bring subtle refinements like new colors, stronger titanium frames, and possibly the Action button from the Pro models. The device is expected to ship with iOS 27 and include the next generation of Apple Intelligence features for on-device AI tasks.

Skipping the traditional numbered model would mark a major shift in Apple’s release cycle and could help simplify its expanding product range. With the Air likely becoming the standard choice for everyday users and the foldable and Pro Max variants catering to premium buyers, Apple appears ready to redefine its iPhone lineup in 2026. Reports suggest the iPhone 18 may eventually arrive in early 2027 as part of a split launch cycle.
