Attention is gradually shifting toward the next generation of software updates from Apple as the company prepares for its annual developer event. The technology giant is expected to introduce iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference 2026.
According to reports from a well-known journalist, the upcoming operating systems are unlikely to feature a major visual redesign similar to the Liquid Glass interface introduced last year. Instead, Apple is expected to focus on refining the existing design while adding features aimed at supporting a rumoured foldable iPhone.
The Liquid Glass design, introduced with iOS 26, brought a glass-like visual style across system elements such as navigation bars, widgets, icons, buttons and search fields. The design language was inspired by visionOS, the operating system powering the Apple Vision Pro.
Reports indicate that Apple will continue improving the Liquid Glass interface rather than replacing it. Some users had raised concerns about readability when translucent layers overlapped with text or icons. The company is reportedly addressing these issues through updates like iOS 26.4, which is expected to be announced soon.
In earlier beta versions, Apple experimented with a system-wide option that allowed users to adjust the intensity of the glass effect. While a limited version of this feature exists on the lock screen clock, extending it across the entire interface—such as app folders, navigation bars and the home screen—presented engineering challenges.
Although the visual design may remain largely the same, the next software update could introduce major internal changes to support a new device category: a foldable iPhone. Engineers are reportedly working on interface layouts that can adapt dynamically when the device is unfolded.
In this mode, iPhone apps may behave more like iPad applications. For example, navigation bars could appear on the left side of the screen to make better use of the larger internal display. Apple is also said to be testing split-screen multitasking on the iPhone for the first time, allowing 2 apps to run side by side on the larger display.
The Liquid Glass interface itself was first introduced at Worldwide Developers Conference 2025, marking the biggest visual redesign of Apple’s operating systems in more than a decade.
