Apple releases large dataset to support text based image editing AI research

Apple researchers have released a new large scale dataset to support the development of image editing artificial intelligence models. The dataset is called Pico Banana 400K. It includes 400000 real images and their AI edited versions. Developers and researchers can use it to train large language models to perform image editing based on text instructions. It is open source but only for research use and not for commercial projects. This launch comes at a time when Apple is facing delays with its own native AI advancements.

A research paper titled “Pico Banana 400K: A Large Scale Dataset for Text Guided Image Editing” has been published on an online journal. The dataset has around 400000 photo edit pairs created from OpenImages. It is organised into 35 types of edits. These include single turn edits, multiple turn sequences, and preference pairs. These choices help represent real world cases of what users usually request while editing photos.

Pico Banana 400K was created using a strong generative model called Nano Banana to produce edits. A separate large multimodal model was used to judge the results. It filtered and corrected attempts that failed. This process has created a dataset that highlights varied photos, human centred images, and pictures with text. It includes both short and long written instructions to support research.

Apple dataset also has negative examples and preference pairs. These help alignment research by teaching models what to avoid and what looks better. The paper explains which types of edits work well. It says style changes and overall lighting corrections are strong. It also states that precise object movement and text editing in images remain challenging. The paper clearly mentions these limits.

Apple itself is still working on improving its in house AI. Apple Intelligence was added to more apps and features with the launch of the iPhone 17 series. However the major Siri upgrade first announced in 2024 is still delayed.
