Apple’s long anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market may arrive with a key engineering upgrade that sets it apart from existing devices, according to new leaks circulating ahead of its expected 2026 launch.
According to a tipster posting on the South Korean blogging platform Naver, Apple plans to use liquid metal material for the hinge of its first foldable phone. This material is expected to improve hinge durability and reduce stress at the folding point, an area that remains a challenge for most foldable devices. The rest of the chassis is tipped to feature titanium, with the leak suggesting Apple is working on an improved version of the metal used earlier on models like the iPhone 15 Pro. Changes in alloy composition and manufacturing processes are also said to help lower the overall weight.
The report adds that Apple has been experimenting with liquid metal for over 15 years and may finally bring it to market with the iPhone Fold. These claims align with earlier leaks stating that supplier Dongguan Yi’an Technology could benefit from the move. The company is reportedly the exclusive supplier of the liquid metal material, which may be used in key internal components of the folding mechanism.
Previous reports indicate the iPhone Fold could follow a book style design with a wide display layout closer to the Google Pixel Fold. The device is said to feature a 5.5-inch outer screen and a 7.8-inch inner display. For comparison, the rumoured Samsung Wide Fold is expected to offer a 5.35-inch inner display and a 7.58-inch outer screen. The foldable iPhone is also tipped to have a flatter surface with a less visible crease, based on early CAD renders. Other expected features include dual rear cameras, dual selfie cameras, an A20 Pro chipset built on 2nm technology, Apple’s C2 modem and Touch ID integrated into the power button.
