Apple explores iPhone chip assembly and packaging in India

Apple is taking initial steps to strengthen its manufacturing presence in India, with early stage talks with domestic semiconductor companies. According to a report, the company is in discussions with Indian chipmakers to assemble and package components used in the iPhone.

This marks the first time Apple has considered assembling and packaging certain chips in India. The report said it is not yet clear which components will be handled locally, although display related chips are seen as the most likely candidates.

Apple is reported to have held talks with Murugappa Group owned CG Semi, which is setting up an outsourced semiconductor assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The discussions are said to be at a preliminary stage.

A news agency said it could not independently verify the report. Apple and CG Semi did not immediately respond to requests for comment. CG Semi told the newspaper that it does not comment on market speculation or discussions with specific customers. “We will make appropriate disclosures as and when there is something concrete to share,” the company said.

Apple has been steadily expanding its manufacturing presence in India. The company is working towards producing most of the iPhones sold in the United States at Indian factories by the end of 2026. It has also accelerated these plans to reduce risks linked to potential tariff increases in China, which remains its primary manufacturing base.

In April, the US administration imposed 26 percent duties on imports from India. This was significantly lower than the more than 100 percent duties applied to Chinese goods at the time. Washington has since paused most of these duties for 3 months, except those related to China.

If the discussions progress, the move could signal a new phase in Apple’s India strategy by bringing parts of the semiconductor assembly and packaging process into the country.
