Apple is reportedly preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market, which is currently dominated by brands like Samsung. According to industry reports, the company could unveil its first foldable iPhone in 2026, possibly alongside the iPhone 18 series. This launch will mark Apple’s long-awaited debut in the fast-growing foldable device category.
Launch timeline and design
Most reports point to a 2026 launch, although some suggest the timeline could shift to 2027. The device is expected to feature a book-style foldable design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series and Google Pixel Fold. The foldable iPhone may measure around 9 to 9.5 millimetres when folded and 4.5 to 4.8 millimetres when unfolded, aligning with the size of other high-end foldables currently available.
Display and camera
Leaks indicate that the foldable iPhone will include two displays: a 7.8-inch foldable inner screen and a 5.5-inch external display. The layout is expected to be wider and shorter, resembling an iPad-like viewing experience. The device is rumoured to feature a dual 48MP rear camera setup, similar to the standard iPhone 17, along with two front-facing cameras. An under-display camera may be placed on the internal screen, while the external one could use a punch-hole design.
Hardware and features
Apple may reintroduce Touch ID with a side-mounted button, replacing the usual Face ID. The device is likely to run on the new A20 processor built on a 2-nanometre process for better performance and efficiency. It may also use the company’s in-house C2 modem, designed to reduce dependence on external suppliers.
Memory, storage and battery
The foldable iPhone is expected to include 12 GB of RAM with storage options of 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. It could also feature a 5,000 mAh to 5,500 mAh battery, the largest ever in an iPhone.
Price expectations
Early estimates suggest that the foldable iPhone could be priced around 2,000 dollars, roughly Rs 1,77,000, placing it in direct competition with flagship foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
