Apple continues to widen its MacBook portfolio, introducing laptops designed for different categories of users. The line-up now includes the premium MacBook Air M4 and the newly launched MacBook Air M5, both powered by Apple’s in-house chips, along with the MacBook Neo, which is aimed at students and everyday users looking for a more affordable option. From design and performance to storage and battery life, each device targets a specific audience with distinct features and pricing.
In terms of design, the MacBook Air M4 and MacBook Air M5 look very similar. Both laptops feature Apple’s signature aluminium unibody design that is slim, lightweight and minimalistic. The devices come with a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display, while the M5 version is also expected to offer a larger 15-inch option. These displays deliver sharp visuals, vibrant colours and brightness levels of around 500 nits, making them suitable for video streaming, photo editing, and everyday browsing. The MacBook Neo focuses more on affordability and uses a standard 13-inch LCD display instead of the Retina panel. It offers a good viewing experience for daily tasks but does not match the brightness or colour accuracy of the Air models.
The biggest difference between the three laptops is performance. The MacBook Air M4 runs on Apple’s M4 chip with a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, delivering reliable performance for most everyday tasks. The MacBook Air M5 introduces Apple’s newer M5 chip, which improves graphics, CPU efficiency and artificial intelligence capabilities through an upgraded neural engine. This makes it a better option for users who work with large files or video content. The MacBook Neo takes a simpler route and uses the A18 Pro chip, derived from Apple’s mobile processors. It includes a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, which should comfortably handle tasks like web browsing, video streaming, note-taking and document editing.
Memory and storage options also highlight the target audience for each model. The MacBook Air M4 starts with 16GB unified memory and can be configured up to 32GB, while storage ranges from 256GB to 2TB. The MacBook Air M5 begins with 512GB storage and may offer configurations up to 4TB along with improved memory bandwidth. The MacBook Neo provides 8GB memory with 256GB or 512GB storage, suitable for students and light users. In connectivity, the Air models feature 2 Thunderbolt ports, MagSafe charging and support for Wi-Fi 6E. The Neo is expected to rely mainly on USB-C ports and basic wireless connectivity. Battery life remains strong across all models. The MacBook Air M4 offers up to 18 hours, the M5 may last slightly longer, while the Neo is designed for a full day of regular use. In pricing, the MacBook Air M5 starts at Rs 1,19,900, the MacBook Air M4 at Rs 90,068 and the MacBook Neo at Rs 69,990.
