Apple Developing ChatGPT-Style AI as It Races to Catch Up

Apple is reportedly building a ChatGPT-style chatbot called “Answer Engine” as it tries to close the gap with rivals in the artificial intelligence race. The tool is designed to respond to user queries using data from across the web. It may be launched as a standalone app or be integrated into Siri, Safari and other Apple services.

The project is being led internally by a newly formed team known as Answers, Knowledge, and Information. Apple is currently hiring for this division, seeking professionals with expertise in search algorithms and engine development.

Apple has been slow in rolling out advanced AI features, even as competitors made major progress. The company recently launched Apple Intelligence, but it admitted to delays and shortcomings, including the postponed integration of ChatGPT into Siri. Existing AI features, such as message summaries, have been seen as basic and not particularly impactful.

Meanwhile, Apple has suffered key talent losses in the AI space. At least four top researchers, including the head of its AI division Ruoming Pang, have moved to Meta’s Superintelligence team. Reports suggest Pang was offered a compensation package worth over 200 million dollars.

Apple CEO Tim Cook, in a recent investor call, indicated the company is “open to M&A that accelerates [Apple’s] roadmap.” Investors are urging Apple to pursue acquisitions or partnerships to bolster its AI capabilities. Some are calling for the acquisition of Perplexity, an AI search startup led by Indian-origin scientist Arvind Srinivas, as a way to boost Siri’s performance.

Despite trailing in AI, Apple continues to show strength in core areas. The company recently reported 94 billion dollars in quarterly revenue, its strongest growth since 2021, driven by strong iPhone sales and increasing services income. However, analysts remain cautious, pointing to long-term challenges such as global tariffs and Apple’s slow AI rollout.
