Apollo Hospitals Expands AI Investments to Enhance Healthcare Operations

New Delhi: Apollo Hospitals is ramping up its investment in artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance hospital operations and lessen the administrative workload for healthcare workers. The organization intends to broaden the use of AI-driven automation for activities like medical documentation and diagnostic assistance. With more than 10,000 hospital beds under its management, Apollo has dedicated 3.5 percent of its digital budget to AI over the last two years.

Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director at Apollo Hospitals, stated that the company intends to increase this investment. “Our objective is to free up two to three hours a day for doctors and nurses through the use of AI,”  she said in a recent interview.

The hospital chain is creating AI tools to evaluate electronic medical records (EMRs) and offer suggestions for diagnoses, tests, and treatments. These tools will also help with transcribing doctors’ notes, producing discharge summaries, and managing nurses’ schedules. Furthermore, Apollo is developing an AI-driven system to assist clinicians in choosing the right antibiotics.

Apollo plans to boost its bed capacity by one-third over the next four years, with a portion of the revenue from this growth allocated to further AI advancements. The hospital group aims to implement AI while keeping operational costs stable.

Other prominent hospital chains, such as Fortis Healthcare, Max Healthcare, and Medanta, are also embracing AI. However, obstacles like high implementation costs, varying data formats, and the scarcity of electronic medical records hinder AI adoption in the industry. Joydeep Ghosh, a partner at Deloitte India, notes that these challenges continue to impact the widespread use of AI in Indian healthcare.

Despite these hurdles, healthcare providers view AI as a means to enhance efficiency and patient care, with anticipated growth in investments in the coming years.
