Anthropic has announced that it will update its terms of service and privacy policy to allow the use of chat transcripts to train its AI chatbot Claude. The change will apply from September 28 and will affect all users across subscription plans including Claude Free, Pro, Max and Code.
However, users of Claude for Work on Team and Enterprise plans, as well as Claude Gov and Claude Education, will not be impacted. Those accessing Claude through third-party services such as Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI are also exempt.
From September 28, most accounts will be automatically opted in to share chats for AI training. New users signing up will see an option labelled “Help improve Claude” which can be toggled off to opt out. Existing users have until the deadline to opt out and can still change their settings afterwards.
To opt out on mobile, users should open the app, tap the three-line icon, go to Settings, then Privacy, and switch off the “Help improve Claude” option. On the web, users need to click their profile icon, open Settings, select Privacy and turn off the same option.
Anthropic has clarified that if a user agrees to the new policy, only new and resumed chats will be used for training. Older conversations will not be included. Data collected from opted-in users will be stored for five years to detect misuse and harmful patterns. Previously, the company retained user data for only 30 days.
The update comes as several tech companies revise their privacy terms to use customer data for AI training. Earlier this year, a file-sharing platform faced criticism for suggesting user files could be used to improve machine learning models before it removed such references.
