Expanding the capabilities of its AI platform, Anthropic has introduced a new feature for Claude that allows the chatbot to control a user’s computer and perform tasks independently.
The feature is part of Claude’s Computer Use capability and is currently available as a research preview. Users can access it through Claude Code and Claude Cowork. It uses agentic AI to interact with both connected and legacy applications using a virtual keyboard and mouse. It can also read on-screen content through screenshots.
In a post on X, Claude’s official account confirmed that the chatbot can now complete tasks on a PC autonomously. While full details were not disclosed, the feature builds on the recently launched Claude Dispatch, which allows users to remotely control Claude on their computers.
With this capability, Claude can open applications, browse the internet, and work on productivity tools such as spreadsheets and documents. The system first attempts to complete tasks using connected apps like Slack and Calendar. If required, it seeks user permission to open legacy apps directly on the device.
Felix Rieseberg, Member of Technical Staff at Anthropic, said the feature becomes more useful when combined with Dispatch. It allows users to control Claude from a mobile device while also enabling it to handle complex tasks independently. However, he noted that as an early-stage technology, Claude’s Computer Use feature is currently slower than human interaction. Future versions are expected to improve in speed and capability.
The introduction highlights the growing shift toward agentic AI systems that can perform real-world digital tasks. It also reflects efforts to make AI more interactive and capable across everyday computing environments.
