Android 16 to Roll Out Advanced Anti-Theft Biometric Lock for All Non-Google, Non-Samsung Phones

A powerful anti-theft upgrade is on the horizon for millions of Android users. While Google rolled out its Identity Check security measure with the December 2024 Pixel Feature Drop, and Samsung swiftly followed by embedding it in One UI 7 (based on Android 15), other Android smartphone brands are now preparing to receive the feature as part of the Android 16 update.

So, what exactly is this new safeguard? At its core, Identity Check is designed to protect your device if it falls into the wrong hands. Once enabled, it demands biometric authentication—such as your fingerprint or facial scan, before allowing access to key security settings or stored sensitive data like passwords. And here’s the clincher: this feature completely disables the usual fallback to PINs or passwords. In other words, “you have to use biometrics.”

This change ensures that even if a thief gets physical access to your phone, they won’t be able to reset your security settings or steal critical information—unless they somehow force you to authenticate with your fingerprint or face. And as the report puts it, if that’s the case, “we’re not talking theft anymore but kidnapping at the least, and you have bigger problems.”

Because this feature demanded a complete overhaul of how biometric authentication works in Android, it couldn’t just be added via a regular update—it required deep integration into the OS itself. That’s why only Android 16 will bring this next-level defense mechanism to devices outside the Google and Samsung ecosystem.

With OEMs now gearing up to implement it, Android 16 promises a leap forward in personal data protection, transforming smartphones into more secure fortresses than ever before.
