Amazon unveils Amazon Leo satellite service to expand global internet access

Amazon has officially introduced Amazon Leo, the satellite based internet project that was earlier known as Project Kuniper. The name Leo refers to low Earth orbit of up to two thousand kilometres, where Amazon has already placed around one hundred and fifty three satellites. The purpose of Amazon Leo is to provide stable internet access to underserved communities in several countries, with a special focus on areas that are remote and difficult to reach.

Amazon Leo is part of Amazon’s Devices and Services division, which also includes Echo and Kindle. The project is based in Redmond, Washington, and is supported by a satellite production facility in Kirkland. This facility can manufacture up to five satellites per day.

Amazon Leo is built on three main components. These are satellites, customer terminals and ground infrastructure. The ground infrastructure includes gateway antennas for secure data transmission, along with TT and C antennas that manage satellite operations and ensure the overall health of the system. This infrastructure also connects to the internet or private networks to deliver wide area global coverage.

The satellites are already in low Earth orbit. They relay data between gateway antennas and users. The customer terminals are called Leo Pro, Leo Ultra and Leo Nano. These terminals provide connectivity to end users. Amazon plans to deploy three thousand satellites in the first phase of the constellation.

It is suggested that Amazon Leo satellites will operate between five hundred and ninety and six hundred and thirty kilometres above Earth. So far, Amazon has secured more than eighty launch contracts. This is considered one of the biggest commercial launch procurements in history. The terminals will offer different speeds. Leo Nano can provide up to one hundred Mbps. Leo Pro can provide up to four hundred Mbps. Leo Ultra can provide up to one Gbps.

Amazon Leo is expected to begin serving selected enterprise customers by late 2025. A wider rollout is planned for 2026. There is no information yet on pricing or plans. More details are expected to be announced soon.
