Smart home security is taking a broader turn as Amazon introduces a major upgrade to its Ring doorbell and camera ecosystem, aimed at safety, automation, and smarter alerts.
At CES 2026 in Las Vegas, Amazon announced new features for its Ring devices, including fire alerts, an in-app app store, advanced sensors, and AI-powered detection tools.
The newly launched Ring Sensors can detect motion, door and window openings, glass breakage, smoke, and carbon monoxide. They can also monitor leaks, temperature shifts, air quality, and allow users to control connected lights and appliances within a smart home network.
Amazon is also rolling out an app store inside the Ring app, enabling compatibility with third-party applications. The app store will be available initially in the U.S., with users able to browse apps in the coming weeks. These apps are expected to focus on small business use cases and everyday home needs.
To address rising fire risks in drought-prone regions, Amazon has partnered with Watch Duty. Real-time fire updates and early warnings will now appear in the Ring app’s Neighbors section, where users can also share live camera footage.
All new devices support Amazon Sidewalk, a shared mesh network that allows Echo and Ring devices to remain connected even when outside Wi-Fi range by sharing a small portion of bandwidth.
Amazon is also introducing “AI Unusual Event Alerts,” which learn daily activity patterns and flag unexpected behavior based on location, actions, and clothing. For users subscribed to Amazon’s Virtual Security Guard service, these alerts may trigger automatic intervention. Recently launched AI tools also enable Alexa responses and personalized alerts using recognition data from a database of 50 faces.
