Amazon has announced the launch of its new compute cluster project named Rainier. The company said that artificial intelligence firm Anthropic will use more than one million chips from this infrastructure by the end of the year.
Project Rainier began last year to build a large scale AI compute network spread across multiple data centres in the United States. The system uses nearly half a million of Amazon’s in house Trainium2 chips.
As artificial intelligence models continue to grow in size and capability, cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services are increasing their data centre capacity to support the rising demand for powerful computing systems.
Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon, is using the Rainier compute cluster to build and deploy its AI model Claude. The firm will expand its usage to more than one million Trainium2 chips across Amazon Web Services before the end of this year. Amazon also stated that Rainier’s compute power will support future versions of Claude.
