Amazon eyes broader market for its AI chips as demand surges

In a strategic shift in its artificial intelligence roadmap, Amazon is considering selling its in-house AI chips to external companies, expanding beyond its core cloud ecosystem.

According to a report, CEO Andy Jassy said the company is evaluating the possibility of offering its custom-built chips to customers outside of Amazon Web Services.

Amazon’s chip division, which develops processors such as Graviton and Trainium, is witnessing strong momentum. The business is currently on track to generate over $20 billion in annual revenue, driven by increasing demand for AI infrastructure.

Jassy noted that this figure could rise significantly, potentially reaching $50 billion if the chips are made available more broadly to third-party customers.

The move comes as demand for AI computing power continues to grow globally, prompting major technology companies to design their own chips and reduce dependence on suppliers like Nvidia.

At present, Amazon’s chips are primarily used within AWS to support AI workloads more efficiently and cost-effectively. Expanding access beyond its cloud platform could create a new revenue stream and position Amazon as a stronger competitor in the semiconductor space.

The development reflects a wider industry trend, where tech giants are increasingly building and commercialising proprietary hardware to support long-term AI growth and scalability.
