Amazon has introduced same day delivery for perishable groceries in 1,000 cities across the United States, aiming to compete more closely with services like Instacart and Walmart Plus in the fast growing quick commerce market. The company plans to extend the service to more than 2,300 cities by the end of the year.
Customers can now order fresh groceries such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat, seafood, and baked goods, alongside household essentials, electronics, and other same day eligible items.
Amazon says its “specialized temperature controlled fulfilment network” ensures that perishable products remain fresh. Orders undergo a six point quality inspection both upon arrival and before dispatch, while temperature sensitive items are packed in insulated bags for delivery.
Prime members can enjoy free same day delivery on orders over 25 dollars. For orders below this amount, Prime subscribers can still use the service for 2.99 dollars. Non Prime customers can access same day delivery for 12.99 dollars per order, regardless of value.
“When Amazon began to add perishable groceries like bananas, milk, eggs, and bread to its Same Day Delivery service in regions like Phoenix, Orlando, and Kansas City, customers embraced the convenience,” the company stated in a press release. “Strawberries, Honeycrisp apples, limes, and avocados now rank among the top 10 items in Same Day Delivery carts.”
The expansion follows challenges in attracting customers to Amazon’s physical stores, with the company now focusing on growing its online grocery delivery network to meet rising demand for faster and fresher deliveries.
