Amazon and Google have teamed up to launch a new multicloud networking service aimed at providing faster and more reliable connectivity. The companies said the service will help businesses avoid disruptions, which have become costly even during brief internet outages.
The service allows customers to create private, high-speed links between Amazon and Google’s cloud platforms in minutes instead of weeks. This launch comes just over a month after an Amazon Web Services outage on October 20 caused thousands of websites to go offline, including popular apps. The incident is estimated to have cost U.S. companies between $500 million and $650 million, according to an analytics firm.
The new solution merges AWS Interconnect Multicloud with Google Cloud Cross-Cloud Interconnect to improve interoperability across networks. “This collaboration between AWS and Google Cloud represents a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity,” said Robert Kennedy, vice president of network services at AWS. Rob Enns, Vice President and General Manager of cloud networking at Google Cloud, added that the network will make it easier for customers to move data and applications between clouds. Salesforce is among the first companies to adopt the new service.
AWS remains the largest cloud provider globally, followed by Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Companies like Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet are investing billions to expand infrastructure to handle growing internet traffic and the increasing demands of artificial intelligence. In the third quarter, Amazon’s cloud division generated $33 billion in revenue, more than double Google’s $15.16 billion.
