Ilya Sutskever, the former top scientist at OpenAI, co-founded Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a stealth-mode AI business that has received investments from Alphabet and Nvidia, according to people who spoke to Reuters. Despite only being founded in June 2023, the firm has already grown to become one of the most valuable AI startups, with its most recent investment round valuing it at an astounding $32 billion.
Lightspeed Venture Partners and Andreessen Horowitz also participated in the investment round, which was led by Greenoaks with a purported $500 million contribution. It comes after a previous $1 billion increase in September 2023 that estimated SSI’s worth at $5 billion.
Despite being extremely private about its product strategy, SSI is allegedly developing next-generation AI models that will outperform existing systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude.
In a related strategic move, Alphabet’s cloud computing division has agreed to supply SSI with Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), departing from Google’s previous position of keeping its proprietary AI processors for internal usage.
According to reports, SSI prefers TPUs to Nvidia’s GPUs, which have had a dominant market share of over 80% for a long time in the AI chip industry. Given that Google provides both TPUs and Nvidia GPUs through its cloud platform to meet new demands in the field of AI model creation, this preference may indicate a more significant change in AI infrastructure.
A hint of the growing competition among cloud titans in AI infrastructure is the fact that Google and Amazon are still making significant investments in Anthropic, another AI competitor that is creating models on Amazon’s Trainium and Inferentia chips.
A broader trend of cloud companies purchasing strategic holdings in AI laboratories is reflected in the SSI deal. Nvidia has supported both xAI and OpenAI, while Microsoft has positioned its processors on OpenAI, Amazon, and Google on Anthropic.
SSI, for its part, is counting on constructing models that go beyond mere language recognition, with an objective to create reasoning-driven AI systems that eventually transcend human cognitive powers.
