Alibaba unveils Quark AI glasses to enter the global AI wearables market

Alibaba has launched its new Quark artificial intelligence glasses in China, marking a major step in the company’s move into the fast growing AI wearables market. The segment is currently led by Meta across global markets. The new device will start at a price of 1,899 yuan which is about 268 dollars. It will run on Alibaba’s Qwen artificial intelligence model and app.

The Quark glasses are designed to look like normal eyewear. They have a black plastic frame rather than the bulkier designs seen in many headsets made by Meta and other firms. Alibaba said the glasses will have strong integration with its major apps, including its payment service and its online shopping platform. Users will be able to access features such as on the go translation and instant price recognition while browsing products.

Alibaba has been making a strong push into consumer artificial intelligence after trailing behind key competitors in recent years. Earlier this month Alibaba rolled out a major upgrade to its artificial intelligence chatbot. The wider technology industry is racing to create new devices for entertainment and computing that rely heavily on artificial intelligence. This competition has led to intense development among the world’s largest tech companies.

Meta continues to lead the virtual reality industry with nearly eighty per cent of the market. Apple has its Vision Pro device, while Samsung introduced its extended reality headset in October. The Samsung headset uses artificial intelligence features from Google. Several Chinese technology companies are also entering this space. Xiaomi released its own AI powered glasses in June and Baidu is already selling a similar product.
