Who is Alexandr Wang, the 28 year old chosen to lead Meta’s new superintelligence labs

Meta has made one of its biggest bets on artificial intelligence by appointing twenty eight year old Alexandr Wang to lead its newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs. The move is part of a fourteen point three billion dollar deal that highlights CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push to strengthen the company’s AI ambitions.

Alexandr Wang is best known as the founder of Scale AI, a company he launched after leaving the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2016. Born in New Mexico to Chinese immigrant parents who worked as physicists, he showed strong interest in mathematics and computing from a young age. Scale AI became a key partner for major companies by providing high quality annotated data used to train machine learning models. By 2024, the startup was valued at nearly fourteen billion dollars, making Wang one of the youngest billionaires in the AI sector.

In June 2025, Meta announced that Wang would direct its complete AI strategy through Meta Superintelligence Labs. The division brings together all of Meta’s research, infrastructure and product teams. In an internal note, Wang said, “Superintelligence is coming, and in order to take it seriously, we need to organize around the key areas that will be critical to reach it which are research, product and infrastructure.”

He has reorganized Meta’s AI work into four major focus areas designed to speed up progress toward general purpose systems considered by many to be the next major stage in AI development. Meta’s investment in Scale AI is meant to strengthen its capabilities. Scale’s deep experience in data pipelines and large scale model training gives Meta tools to compete with global leaders trying to advance artificial general intelligence.

Wang’s new role comes with major challenges. Managing such a large AI operation requires careful attention to ethics, safety and transparency. Both Wang and Meta have faced questions in these areas before. The changes inside Meta will also be closely watched to see how they affect teamwork, development speed and long term strategy.

At twenty eight, Alexandr Wang now leads one of the most ambitious AI programs in the world. For Meta, this appointment is both a risk and a bold investment in the future of artificial intelligence. Whether he can guide the company toward true superintelligence remains an open question.
