Airtel tests Starlink connectivity to enable 4G phones without network signal

In a move aimed at expanding network reach, Airtel Africa has successfully tested satellite-based connectivity that allows smartphones to stay connected even in zero coverage areas.

Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to test Starlink Mobile, enabling standard 4G smartphones to access data and messaging services without relying on terrestrial networks.

4G smartphones connect directly to satellites

During the trial, regular 4G devices were able to connect seamlessly to Starlink’s satellite constellation, which includes over 650 satellites. This allowed connectivity in remote and hard-to-reach areas where traditional mobile networks are unavailable.

The test demonstrated that users can stay connected even in locations with no ground-based network infrastructure.

Messaging, calling and transactions enabled

The trial supported light-data applications, including WhatsApp calling and messaging via platforms like Facebook Messenger. Users were also able to perform financial transactions using the Airtel app.

This shows that essential communication and digital services can function effectively even without mobile network coverage.

Expansion planned across markets

Airtel Africa plans to use insights from the testing phase to expand the service across its 14 markets. However, the rollout will depend on regulatory approvals in each country.

The initiative aligns with the company’s broader goal of ensuring seamless connectivity for users regardless of location.

Next phase to include voice and broadband

Looking ahead, Airtel Africa is working on the next stage of development, which includes enabling voice calling and expanding broadband capabilities through Starlink Mobile V2.

This would further enhance the range of services delivered via satellite connectivity.

Moving towards always-on connectivity

The successful trial marks a step forward in bridging connectivity gaps and advancing toward always-on communication. Airtel Africa aims to ensure that users remain connected, even in the most remote areas.
